Setting up the bench and bar

Position a decline bench under the Smith machine bar. Set the bench angle at 15 to 30 degrees below horizontal. Adjust the bar height so it can be reached with arms slightly bent at the bottom of the rep. Test the setup with light load to confirm the bar path travels through the lower chest as desired.

Body position

Lie on the bench with legs hooked under the foot pads. Slide down the bench until the bar is over the lower chest at the starting position. Pull the shoulder blades down and back against the bench.
