2. Close grip bench press

A primary accessory exercise for bench press strength. Hands placed closer together (15 to 25 cm apart) shifts work to the triceps which limit lockout strength. Four sets of 4 to 6 reps. Develops the triceps strength that supports bench press progression.

3. Incline barbell bench press

Heavy upper chest work that supports overall pressing strength. Four sets of 4 to 6 reps. Strong incline pressing develops the upper chest fibres that contribute to flat bench press performance. Many programmes include heavy incline work alongside flat bench press.

4. Floor press

Bench press performed lying on the floor rather than a bench. The shortened range of motion (bar stops at the floor before reaching the chest) emphasises the lockout portion of the press. Three sets of 4 to 6 reps. Useful for developing lockout strength and triceps power.

5. Pin press
