Pre-workout side effects
Pre-workout produces a range of side effects, most mild and some significant. Knowing what is normal, what is concerning and what to do about each helps you use pre-workout sensibly. Some side effects are harmless and predictable. Others warrant adjusting your use or seeing your GP. Here is the practical breakdown of what can happen.
Normal pre-workout side effects
Several side effects are predictable and largely harmless for most users. Knowing they are normal helps you not worry about them while still recognising when something has changed.
The tingling
Beta alanine produces tingling, itching or pins and needles sensations on the skin, particularly on the face, neck and hands. The sensation lasts 60 to 90 minutes after taking it. The mechanism is well understood. The tingling is harmless and not an allergic reaction. It typically becomes less noticeable over weeks of consistent use.
Increased alertness and energy
The whole point of pre-workout is feeling more alert and energetic. The subjective effect ranges from mild to strong depending on dose, individual sensitivity and tolerance state. Stronger feelings are not necessarily better. The most useful effect is moderate increased alertness rather than overwhelming stimulation.
Modest heart rate increase
Pre-workout typically raises resting heart rate by 5 to 15 beats per minute. The effect is the same as climbing stairs or light activity. For healthy adults this is within normal physiological range. Heart rate that feels alarming or pounding may indicate the dose is too high.
Mild flushing or warmth
Some users experience mild warmth or skin flushing from pre-workout. The blood flow changes from citrulline contribute. The effect is harmless and usually fades during training. Severe flushing or skin reactions that persist warrant attention but mild warmth is normal.
Side effects worth addressing
Several side effects are bothersome enough to address through changes in dose, timing or product choice. They are not usually dangerous but they degrade your experience.
Jitters and shakiness
Excessive stimulation produces shaky hands, restlessness and twitchiness. This indicates the dose is too high for your sensitivity. Reduce the dose. Most users find their optimal dose is significantly below the maximum on the label. Jitters during training also interfere with technique and concentration.
Anxiety
Pre-workout can trigger or worsen anxiety in susceptible people. Reduce dose, switch to lower stimulant products, switch to stim free options or stop entirely depending on severity. Persistent anxiety regardless of pre-workout warrants speaking to a GP. Anxiety is one of the more common reasons people stop using pre-workout.
Digestive issues
Stomach upset, nausea, diarrhoea or cramping during training. Several pre-workout ingredients can cause digestive issues including caffeine, beta alanine and citrulline malate. Trying different products with different ingredient combinations sometimes resolves the issue. Taking pre-workout with food rather than on an empty stomach can help.
Headaches
Pre-workout headaches can come from dehydration (caffeine is mildly dehydrating), high stimulant dose, vasoconstriction or other factors. Hydration helps significantly. Reducing dose helps. Some users react to specific ingredients. If headaches are persistent, identifying and avoiding the trigger ingredient may resolve them.
Side effects that warrant attention
Some side effects require more serious response including reducing or stopping pre-workout and possibly seeing a GP.
Palpitations
Awareness of your heart beating, irregular rhythms, sense that the heart is fluttering or skipping beats. Some users experience this with pre-workout. Occasional mild palpitations may not be significant. Persistent or frightening palpitations warrant medical attention. Speak to your GP if palpitations are occurring regularly with or without pre-workout.
Chest discomfort
Any chest pain, pressure or tightness during or after pre-workout use needs attention. Mild chest tightness from stimulant effect may resolve quickly. Persistent chest discomfort needs medical assessment. Severe chest pain is an emergency. Call 999 for severe chest pain or pain with shortness of breath, sweating or arm pain.
Elevated blood pressure
Sustained elevated blood pressure (above 140/90) requires attention. Regular monitoring catches this. Reduce or stop pre-workout. Speak to your GP about hypertension. Pre-workout induced blood pressure rise is usually reversible when use stops or moderates but may need other management if persistent.
Severe mood changes
Significant mood changes, depression, persistent anxiety, panic attacks or other mental health symptoms that started or worsened with pre-workout use deserve attention. Stop pre-workout. Speak to your GP. The connection may be the pre-workout or other factors may be contributing. Either way the symptoms warrant assessment.
Responding to side effects
How to respond to pre-workout side effects depends on which effects you experience and how severe they are. A structured approach helps.
For mild bothersome effects
Reduce the dose first. Half scoops or smaller portions often resolve issues. If lower doses do not work, try different products with different formulations. Stim free options eliminate most stimulant related side effects. Different brands use different ingredient combinations. Experimenting finds what suits you.
For persistent issues
Take a break from pre-workout entirely. 2 to 4 weeks tells you whether pre-workout was contributing to symptoms. Many users find issues they had attributed to other causes were actually pre-workout related. After the break, you can decide whether to return at lower doses or skip pre-workout entirely.
For concerning symptoms
Stop pre-workout. Speak to your GP about persistent or significant symptoms. Do not push through palpitations, chest discomfort, severe anxiety or persistent mood changes. Pre-workout is optional. Your health is not. The threshold for medical advice should be low.
For emergencies
Call 999 for severe chest pain, severe shortness of breath, signs of a heart attack or stroke, severe allergic reactions or any other medical emergency. Tell the paramedics about any supplements you have taken. Severe adverse events from pre-workout are rare but possible, particularly with high doses or in vulnerable individuals.
