FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association, which translates from French as the International Federation of Association Football. It is the global governing body responsible for overseeing football (soccer) worldwide, organising major international tournaments and setting the rules of the game.

Origins and Role

Founded in 1904, FIFA was established to create a unified organisation to manage international football competitions and standardise the sport’s regulations. Its headquarters are based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Today, FIFA governs the global structure of football, including the organisation of the FIFA World Cup the sport’s most prestigious tournament alongside numerous other competitions for men, women and youth. It works closely with six continental confederations, national football associations and numerous stakeholders to promote and develop the game worldwide.

Why the French Name?

FIFA’s name is in French because the organisation was founded in a period when French was the dominant diplomatic language. This tradition has been maintained despite its international reach and the widespread use of English in football today.

Beyond Organising Tournaments

FIFA’s responsibilities extend beyond hosting tournaments. It establishes the Laws of the Game in partnership with the International Football Association Board, promotes grassroots football, ensures fair play and integrity through regulatory measures, and drives initiatives on social responsibility, gender equality and sustainability within the sport.
