The vertical leg press is the less common cousin of the angled leg press. The exercise places the user flat on their back with feet pressing straight up against a sled. Pure vertical loading

Unlike angled leg press where the sled travels at 45 degrees, vertical leg press loads the legs straight against gravity. The full bodyweight of the sled acts on the legs. No mechanical advantage from the angle. The pure vertical loading produces strong stimulus.

Lower absolute loads

Users typically work with much lower numbers on vertical leg press than angled. The angled version has mechanical advantage that makes the same effective resistance appear as higher numbers. Vertical press numbers actually represent harder work per kilogram on the machine.

Less common machine

Vertical leg press machines are less common than angled versions. Many commercial gyms do not have them. Quality bodybuilding focused gyms more often stock them. Availability is the main practical limitation for many users.

Strong quad stimulus

The exercise places significant load on the quads through full range of motion. The seated position with hip flexion limits glute involvement. Pure leg work without major posterior chain contribution. Useful for quad focused training when available.

How to do it

Technique on the machine

Vertical leg press technique differs from angled leg press. Knowing the differences matters.

Setup and position

Lie flat on your back on the machine bench. Position hips at the appropriate point under the sled. Place feet on the platform shoulder width apart. Release safety catches. The position should be comfortable with full range of motion available.

The descent

Lower the sled by bending your knees. The sled comes down toward your chest. Lower until your thighs approach your chest or you reach comfortable depth. Maintain even foot pressure throughout. The bottom position should not lift your hips off the bench.

The ascent

Drive through the whole foot to push the sled back up. Maintain back contact with the bench. Push through to nearly full knee extension without locking out hard. The smooth concentric phase produces consistent stimulus through the working muscles.

Foot position variations

Standard shoulder width with toes slightly out for general training. Different positions produce slightly different emphasis. Lower placement emphasises quads. Higher placement emphasises glutes. The variations work the same as on angled leg press.

Loading characteristics

Vertical press loads fully against gravity. Angled press has mechanical advantage from the 45 degree angle that reduces effective load. A 100 kg sled on vertical produces about 100 kg of work against gravity. A 100 kg sled on angled produces about 70 kg of effective work. Different machines despite similar appearance.

Range of motion

Vertical press allows excellent range of motion for most users. The sled can come close to the chest at the bottom. Angled press range varies more between machines but is generally similar. Both produce good range when used appropriately.

Comfort and accessibility

Angled leg press is more common and more familiar. Vertical leg press can feel awkward to users used to angled. The flat back position feels different from the inclined position. Most users adapt within a few sessions but the initial feel is different.

Hip flexion at bottom

Vertical press produces more hip flexion at the bottom than angled. Users with hip mobility issues may find vertical press uncomfortable. Angled press accommodates limited hip mobility better. Choose based on individual situation.

How to use it

Vertical leg press fits into programmes in several ways. The right approach depends on your goals and machine availability.

For hypertrophy

8 to 15 reps, 3 to 5 sets. Moderate load. The pure vertical loading produces strong quad stimulus. Useful as accessory work after compound exercises or as primary leg exercise when angled leg press is not available.

For high volume work

Multiple sets of high reps (12 to 20+) produce significant hypertrophy stimulus. The fixed path and supportive position permit sustained effort. Useful during volume focused training phases.

As alternative to angled

When angled leg press is unavailable, vertical leg press serves similar purposes. The lower absolute numbers do not indicate less effective training. The exercise can replace angled leg press in most programmes.

For users with back issues

The flat back support reduces spinal loading. Users with back issues can often use vertical leg press without aggravation. The seated position of angled press also works for most users but vertical may suit some specific situations better.
