Setting up the bar and platform

Set the Smith machine bar at a height that sits comfortably across the upper back at standing position. Place a sturdy platform such as a wooden block or low aerobic step under the bar to elevate the toes. The platform should be 4 to 8 cm tall. Position the balls of the feet on the platform with heels free to drop below platform level.

Setting up the body

Step under the bar and rest it across the upper traps in a high bar squat position. Unrack the bar and stand fully upright. The knees should be straight but not locked. The torso stays vertical. The hips, knees and ankles should be in a straight line. The bar load is supported by the skeleton in this position with minimal muscular effort other than the calves.

Executing the rep

Push the body up by extending the ankles. Press up onto the balls of the feet until the heels reach maximum height. Hold the top position for one second. Lower the heels under control to maximum stretch below the platform level. Pause briefly at the stretched position. The full range from deep stretch to peak contraction produces the calf stimulus.

Tempo and breathing

Use a 2 second concentric, 1 second hold at top, 2 second eccentric and brief pause at the bottom. Breathe out on the way up and in on the way down.
