Hypertrophy research has identified the variables that drive muscle growth across muscle groups. The findings apply to calves with some adjustments for the specific fibre composition and recovery characteristics of the calf muscles.

Mechanical tension is primary

Schoenfeld and other hypertrophy researchers have identified mechanical tension as the primary driver of muscle growth. Loading the muscle with sufficient force across its range of motion produces the signal for adaptation. For calves the implication is that load through full range matters more than load through partial range.

Stretched position loading

Recent research has emphasised the importance of loading muscles in their lengthened position. The stretched calf at the bottom of a calf raise represents this position. Exercises that load the calf in its stretched state appear to produce stronger hypertrophy stimulus than exercises that only load in the shortened state.
